Overcoming cancer with AIM BarleyLife

I grew up on a farm and helped my father to grow many vegetables, namely green beans. We plowed, planted, fertilized, and weeded,
helping each seed grow to its fullest potential. By caring for plants and nurturing them to maturity, I would learn that our bodies must be carefully nurtured in much the same way to maintain health and wellness. My passion for health and an interest in the human body led me to become a physical and health educator and coach. My husband, Mike, and I raised three children, Tim, Heidi, and Bryan, all of whom were high-level athletes.

It was around Christmas of 1991 while on a family vacation that the health of our daughter Heidi took a terrible turn for the worse. Her neck started to swell. Within hours, she had a lump the size of a tangerine. We immediately took her to the emergency room. A few days later, we received the diagnosis that Heidi had Hodgkin’s disease—cancer of the lymphatic system—and a sizeable tumor near her thyroid.

It was devastating and unbelievable. Heidi was a sophomore at the academic top of her class at Oregon State University. She was also an amazing dancer and a strong gymnast with the determination of an Olympic athlete. How could she have cancer?

Tears, fear, and darkness seemed to be with us every moment during the next few days. What happens now I wondered? The scripture “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength” helped calm me.

Knowing the healing power of nutrition, we sought the advice of a naturopathic doctor, in addition to seeing an oncologist. Heidi’s blood work revealed a very extreme phosphorous-calcium ratio, very low iron, and other poor markers. Recommendations were given to stop drinking sodas and increase plant-based foods. I knew we could influence these markers with concentrated plant juices; however, it was highly recommended by the oncologists that Heidi have both radiation and chemotherapy for her cancer. I was silently hoping for no chemo to better protect her body systems for the upcoming challenge, but it needed to be her decision.

It was about five days into the ordeal, at the end of a prayer meeting, when a gentle, male voice spoke quietly, “There are other ways to heal besides chemo you know.” He turned to me and added, “Look into green barley.” He had used the AIM product and was confirming what I already knew about the power of plant juices.

Heidi decided to do only the radiation therapy in conjunction with high-level nutrition to build healthy cells. With God leading the way, and AIM BarleyLife® as her nutritional armor, she set out to gain her health back. Along with giving her barley grass juice powder, we added freshly juiced carrots and beets, omega-3, and AIM FloraFood®, all in mega doses, and nutritionally upgraded her diet.

During the first week, her blood work began to move back towards normal. She was able to continue her radiation on specific tissues
without her blood going into a critical zone. Each week the tumor shrunk dramatically. The oncologist was amazed. Heidi took the winter term off for the therapy and to concentrate on “internally” building her body. Only two and a half months later at her final checkup, the doctor said, “As far as I am concerned, you are healed.” These words will never be forgotten. Today Heidi is fine, fit, a physical therapist, and the mother of three little boys. Thank you, Lord!

I continue to reach out and teach the power of BarleyLife and plant concentrates to those with health issues, as well as to athletes to
upgrade their performances. I have seen many sick bodies become well and athletes build more stamina. Green is golden, especially in the most elite form. Capturing the living “Life” in a powder is most difficult. AIM did it with BarleyLife.

Heidi’s Journey …

The most difficult thing I faced along this journey was actually being given the diagnosis of cancer. Sure, I drank too much diet soda and taxed my body with excessive exercise and minimal sleep, but in my mind I was invincible, after all I was a “healthy”
twenty-year-old college student.

Reflecting back on my walk through cancer, I can honestly say many lessons were learned. I learned to trust God with every aspect of my
life, to balance my passions including exercise, and to treat my body as the temple God has made it to be. To this day, I have a great respect for the human body and its ability to heal itself given the proper nutrition and exercise. I realize that regardless of our age, physical condition, or genetic makeup each of us is susceptible to disease. It is our responsibility to keep our bodies strong so that when faced with disease, we can resist it.

Like my mother, I have a passion to pass this information on to others, BarleyLife® and for me this begins at home. While my three boys are still young, ranging from five to nine years old, I daily instill in them the importance of nutrition. In fact, BarleyLife is the first thing we drink in the morning and the first thing my boys ask for when they start to feel sick. As a mother, that makes me smile. Knowing my boys understand the importance of nutrition at such a young age makes my cancer journey worthwhile.

Throat cancer and green barley nutrition

Diagnosed with throat cancer at the age of fifty-eight, Valerie Beales had to undergo massive amounts of chemotherapy and thirty-five radiation treatments over a two-year period. The radiation burned her so badly that the skin on her neck was discolored and blistered. It looked so repulsive that before going out, she had to wrap up her neck.

“When we were out in public with my neck all bandaged up, my husband John used to say ‘What if someone thinks I strangled you?’” recollected Valerie. John passed away a week before their fortieth wedding anniversary. “Before he died, he said that he didn’t know why I was still alive. ‘Must be your meanness,’ he would say jokingly.” The radiation also impacted her nervous system. Valerie would sometimes just fall down, for no apparent reason. “I wasn’t functioning well in body or mind.”

Valerie was hospitalized in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, and eventually had to be fed intravenously. She could not swallow any solid food as her throat and esophagus had also been affected by over-radiation, making them raw and painful. “The doctors put a Vaseline-like cream down my throat to freeze it. I could barely breathe,” recalled Valerie. “I was given Demerol and morphine to ease the pain.”

By April 2012, Valerie weighed only seventy-eight pounds when her brother, Jim Fitzgerald, came for one of his regular visits to her home. Jim was terribly saddened to see his sister so wasted away and drained of energy. He gave her an information sheet about AIM Chairman’s Club Director Janet Pauly and her battle with cancer and asked Valerie if she had ever heard of AIM BarleyLife®. Jim had been buying AIM products for several years from AIM Chairman’s Club Directors Ken and Cheryl Huxter.

After reading about Janet’s health improvement from the nutrient-rich juice powder of young barley plants, Valerie said, “This sounds great.” Her brother had brought along half a canister of BarleyLife hidden in a brown paper bag. But before handing it over, Jim said, “I’m not going to give it to you unless you take it.”

“I could get only bits of food down and thought I was going to die, so I decided to try it,” said Valerie. “But I did have to get used to the taste.” Jim came by every day, always checking up on her and making sure that she was taking BarleyLife, which was beginning to have a positive effect on her health. Along with the nutrients that Valerie so desperately required, BarleyLife’s anti-inflammatory property was like cold water to a thirsty soul by reducing the burning inflammation in her throat and esophagus that had kept her from eating solid food.

Once she started taking BarleyLife, her appetite returned. By June 2012, Valerie had gone through one and a half canisters, and she weighed 103 pounds—a gain of twenty-five pounds within two months. Her brother’s continuing watchdog persistence has paid off healthily. “Before BarleyLife, I couldn’t even walk from the living room to my bedroom. I used to need a cane or walker to get around,” said
Valerie. “Now I could jump over Jim! This is the best I’ve felt since being diagnosed.”

After seeing her deathly ill just a short time ago, Jim told Valerie how excited he was to see her looking so well. One of her doctors also remarked on her improved appearance including the skin on her neck, and, in reply, Valerie mentioned that she had been taking BarleyLife. Life is closer to normal for Valerie these days. With newfound energy, she is back to doing things she enjoys, such as making bread.

Besides the support of her brother Jim, Valerie lives with two of her grandsons, Shane and Griffin, who moved in to be close to her after the death of their grandfather. With a thirteen- and fifteen-year-old under the same roof, life goes on actively for Valerie. Her grandsons have echoed the words of her brother and doctor when they say, “Nana, we’ve never seen you look so good!”

At sixty years old, Valerie looks back at her life, considering some of the factors of her battle with throat cancer. Being a two-packs-a-day smoker is something she could live without. As for the present, Valerie is grateful for having people like her brother and grandsons in her life and the opportunity of simply being around to enjoy life. “I know how good I feel now,” acknowledged Valerie. “I’m impressed with BarleyLife. Maybe it’s given me some more time.”

For a Healthy Prostate…

One of the hormonal changes a middle-aged or older man can go through may result in an enlarged prostate—a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Environmental factors, such as diet, may also trigger BPH, but its exact cause is unknown.

An enlarged prostate compresses the urethra and affects the flow of urine from the bladder. Some of the symptoms 1 of BPH include:

Frequent urination

• Unable to postpone to urinate

• Delay in starting to urinate

• Weak urinary stream – straining

• Intermittent Stream – stopping and starting

• Incontinence (loss of urinary control)

• Painful urination

• Blood in urine

• Inability to empty bladder (acute urinary retention)

Diseases such as prostatitis, bladder stones, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer can also produce some of these symptoms, so seeing a health care practitioner is necessary for an accurate evaluation. Depending on the severity of BPH symptoms, a variety of treatments may be suggested, including drug therapy, surgical approach, and minimally invasive procedures 1. Taking AIM ReAssure® is a natural way to prevent—for men forty and older—or relieve the symptoms of mild to moderate BPH. Its unique, synergistic combination of natural ingredients can help to keep your prostate healthy.

Each 2-capsule serving of ReAssure SP contains 320 mg of saw palmetto berry oil extract, 240 mg of pumpkin seed oil,15 mg of zinc citrate, and 5 mg of lycopene. Scientific research shows that saw palmetto produces “similar improvement in urinary tract symptoms and urinary flow … with fewer adverse treatment events2when compared with finasteride-the commonly prescribed drug that has possible side effects (such as impotence, decreased sex drive, and male breast cancer). Instead of the less-effective berry powder, AIM uses only the beneficial berry oil extract from the saw palmetto.

Pumpkin seed oil improves bladder function and urinary flow, while reducing the frequency of night-time urination. Healthy prostate cells accumulate “the highest level of zinc of any soft tissue in the body”3 so ReAssure SP also provides Z, inc citrate. Rounding out the formula, lycopene is a carotenoid antioxidant that may hinder the growth of prostate cancer cells.

ReAssure SP—a natural way to a healthy prostate. See the datasheet for more details.

Carolyn Kling – Aging Outside the Box

AIM Chairman’s Club Director Carolyn Kling appeared on “Aging Outside the Box®” Syndicated Radio Show on August 18 to share her testimony of health and wealth. Carolyn and her husband Jim were principal founders of AIM and recently reached the Seven Million Dollar Club in earnings through their AIM business.

During the Aging Outside the Box Program, Carolyn her experiences, starting thirty years ago with the founding of The AIM Companies™ and the first barley leaf juice to present day with her role as one of the leading business builders in the history of The AIM Companies. Throughout the hour long segment, Carolyn weaved testimonies of better health through AIM nutrition, opportunity, and success.

“Jim saw that this product was outstanding,” said Carolyn, as she recounted the origins of their BarleyLife history, “and he found people that were taking it who were getting well. One lady with extreme arthritis threw her walker away; another lady had cancer and her doctor wrote a note on a prescription pad that said radiation and barley had put her cancer in remission. So we just went from there.”

Carolyn and Jim quit their real estate business in Nampa, Idaho, to pursue the AIM opportunity full time. Their passion for the products was key to building a strong business.

“We wanted to share with everyone we met,” Carolyn said. “We had a three-foot rule where if you got within three feet, and we had an opportunity, we were going to tell you about having better health.

“We got inspired to help people. We saw testimonies of people getting well and getting healthy with our green leaf powder. So we decided that we had a story to tell and we needed to share it with as many people as we could around the world.”

Aging Outside the Box host Shirley Mitchell described Carolyn’s business as a “roaring bonfire.” Carolyn shared tips from her book, Turning Green Into Gold. Written in 2000 with help from Carolyn’s daughter, AIM Star Sapphire Director Cathy McCrea, the book covers the Kling’s business experiences and business plans with the hope of inspiring others to reach the same heights.

“I don’t know of anything more important that you can give someone than to give them a better way of life and a better quality of health.”

Healthy Changes

Betty Wyatt, AIM Director, Longview, Texas

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. I want you to know that “cancer” is not a death sentence unless you deem it so. I had always seen it as such…but it is NOT! The first thing my husband Larry and I did was to go to the greatest physician known to man, the Lord Jesus Himself, who made it clear that we should go the nutrition route instead of the doctor-advised breast removal, chemotherapy, and radiation.

In discussing our decision with the doctor, Larry said, “You are an intelligent person, so let e ask you a question, and please give me an ntelligent answer. My wife’s immune system is own, and that is why she got cancer in the first place. My question to you is, why do you want to destroy what’s left of her immune system with chemotherapy and radiation?”

The doctor replied with this profound answer, “Well, that’s just the way we do it Mr. Wyatt.”When Larry told her that we decided to go the nutrition route and rebuild my immune system, the doctor responded, “Well, she’ll die Mr. Wyatt.” My husband snapped back and said, “No she won’t. She won’t die until the Lord calls her home”.

The Lord led us to The AIM Companies™, and I started taking eight tablespoons of AIM’s barley grass powder per day. I did this for over three years. Our goal was to strengthen my immune system and kill the cancer.

Overnight, we cut out all meat, sugar, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, carbonated drinks, and all processed food. We started eating as much live (ras) food as possible because even cooked (vegetables lose nutrition. In the first couple of months, we started feeling much better with fewer aches and pains as well as improved regularity. Both of us lost about thirty pounds.

When people ask me how I could make such immediate changes, I tell them that it’s just like when I married Larry by saying “I do”; I made a lifetime commitment. These healthy changes are a lifestyle, not a diet … it’s a way of life. When you get that into your head and heart, it will be easy.

I continue to take AIM Barleylife® andmany other products, such as AIM Herbal Fiberblend®, AIM Cellsparc 360®, and AIM Proancynol® 2000. I don’t take any medication.  I’m now seventy-four years old, and my blood tests remain normal—no cancer.

More Greens for a healthier you!

The Power of concnetrated greens can do wonders on whole-body health. AIM LeafGreens, Which features the leaves of spinach, bean, pea, and barley plants in addition to broccoli sprouts, provides the equivalent of forty-four pounds of leaves in each pound of green powder. More leaves equal more nutrition.

So how does LeafGreens win the concentration game? AIM uses an exclusive ultra-cold filtration technique that chills the LeafGreens juice to below 44° F (6° C) and concentrates the juice through a series of filters. This forces water, salt, and sugars out, leaving a nutrientconcentrated juice behind.

The benefits of nutrient-rich leaves are vast, including a significant amount of healthy protein, quercetin, and kaempferol. In addition, the broccoli sprouts in LeafGreens add a new layer of nutrients that research has found to have cancer-fighting properties.

According to a recent study, the sulforaphane in broccoli may target and kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unaffected. The research showed sulforaphane’s ability to selectively target cancerous prostate cells and avoid healthy prostate cells. This cancer-fighting ability comes from the metabolic process of plant tissue; the unique aspect of sulforaphane is that it fights free radicals and has been proven safe.

Nutrition from leafy, green vegetables is remarkably beneficial, and yet it is absent from the standard, North American diet. Missing out on leafy greens means missing out on chlorophyll, flavonoids, plant antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and so much more.

LeafGreens is a great place to start rebuilding your health. Try LeafGreens in powder form or in capsules.

Many Mountains to Climb

The Personal Journey of AIM-Sponsored  Athlete Martin Benning

Martin Benning welcomes a challenge. Back in 2005, he founded the Seven Summits Cancer Climb to scale the highest peaks on each of the seven continents while bringing attention to cancer support organizations, such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society. Both of these organizations supported Martin and his family during his cancer battle.

So far, Martin and his team have climbed five of the mountaintops. Two remain: one in Antarctica’s Sentinel Range and the second—the highest—in Asia’s Himalayas. Martin is close to coming full circle in a life of climbing and surviving, considering that his childhood was as great a challenge as Mount Everest.

In 1983 at the age of three, Martin had what his parents thought was a bad cold. But it lasted for four weeks. His mother Cathy Clark, who worked in health care, took him to a physician for an examination, which revealed an illness immensely

worse than a stubborn cold. Martin had leukemia. For the next four years, he spent much of his young life in and out of hospitals, where he underwent bone marrow biopsies, radiation, and chemotherapy.

During hospitalizations that lasted anywhere from weeks to months at a time, Martin’s mother and father would rotate their visits to spend as much time with their little boy as was possible. As months turned into years, being in hospitals became such a normal part of Martin’s life that it was not until he was eight years old that he realized that not all kids have to do this. After four years of treatment, seven-year-old Martin was cured of leukemia.

Less than twelve months later, he was diagnosed with cancer of the central nervous system, meaning the cancer had metastasized in other parts of his body including his spine and his brain. This type of cancer is extremely difficult to treat because the cancer drugs are blocked by the blood-brain barrier. The year was 1988, and Martin was given a 10

percent chance of survival.

He had to endure even more radiation, spinal taps, and excruciating rounds of chemotherapy by injection. Martin remembers that the pain would make him curl up into a little ball, and his mother would have to hold him down as the needle pierced his spine. Frequently, the needles would break.

To make the treatments somewhat easier, a catheter—developed and administered by pediatric nephrologist Dr. Robert Hickman at Seattle Children’s Hospital—was inserted into his neck and out through his chest to deliver the cancer drugs more effectively and less painfully.

The last resort was to implant a dome-shaped Ommaya reservoir into his head to allow the blood-carried chemotherapy to reach the brain and spinal column. To this day, Martin still has this plastic device embedded in his skull.

Fortunately, the chemotherapy—so damaging to the body that it often kills the patient—was effective in killing his cancer cells. However, Martin remained cancer-free for less than a year. At the age of ten, he was re-diagnosed with testicular cancer.

More bouts of radiation and chemotherapy followed. Eight to twelve months is the usual protocol, but Martin’s lasted until just before he turned thirteen. “It was the last day of June in 1993 when I received my final chemo,” recalled Martin. “The doctor shook my hand and said he never wanted to see me again!” He had undergone ten years of radiation and chemotherapy and survived the challenges of three life-threatening cancers.

In 2004, Martin crossed paths with another cancer victor, AIM Royal Emerald Director Linda Cole, who chose AIM’s natural health products to fight breast cancer and won. Martin became an AIM-sponsored athlete and began taking AIM products, which he credits with maintaining his health, keeping

cancer at bay, and giving
him the fitness level required to climb the highest peaks on seven continents.

At thirty, Martin has been cancer-free for nearly eighteen years. He has a check-up once a year, but his health concerns as an adult are far more typical, such as maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

Last year, Martin married Emily Garner, whom he met in college. After Emily accompanied him on his team’s fifth climb up Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia, seven years of friendship turned into romance in 2008.

Following in the footsteps of his mother, Martin works in the health care field and recently accepted a position as the director of operations in the primary care division of Seattle’s Swedish Medical Center—one of the hospitals he was treated in as a child.

Dads need the Daily Essentials: Greens, Essential Fatty Acids, and Fiber

My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.

Clarence Budington Kelland

Men’s health falls under the microscope this month with the arrival of Father’s Day. Dads give a lot of themselves at home, work, and play, so it is

important that their health is given a once over every now and then. For some dads, that may mean a trip outside their comfort zone—the doctor’s office.

One of the biggest obstacles to a healthy dad is helping him overcome his invincibility. According to a 2001 report by the American Centers for Disease Control, men are 33 percent less likely to visit a doctor than women. So the bravado of being a guy has its risks because most medical problems can be addressed if there is awareness of the initial symptoms.

Men’s Health Risks

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for both men and women, but the first onset of cardiovascular problems occurs, on average, ten years earlier for men. Risk factors include age, family history, and race. Some of these factors cannot be controlled, but others can. For example, heart disease also strikes those with high cholesterol and high

blood pressure as well as the physically inactive and obese. If dad avoids these latter problems, his heart will thank him.

Another dad danger is stroke. The steps to sidestep stroke are right in line with those to avoid heart disease—a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet and plenty of exercise. Healthy blood pressure levels remain the most crucial element for avoiding stroke.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men. Fortunately, the disease is treatable. Unfortunately, the symptoms of prostate cancer are often masked until it is too late. That is why doctors recommend that men over fifty undergo screening, which can include a blood test or rectal exam. The earlier dad takes the test, the better off he’ll be.

Although stress is not a disease, too much can lead to ill health and has been shown to be a causal factor in the onset of disease. So the stress that dad experiences from the daily demands of work and life

can have a negative impact on his state of health. Exercise is a great stress reliever, and dad should be constantly encouraged to keep in good physical shape.

Daily Prevention from AIM

When all is said and done, prevention remains the best possible stance to take. Along with getting regular exercise and eating well, AIM provides what it takes to keep dad in the best of health. Whether in good shape or dealing with a health issue, every dad needs the Daily Essentials—greens, essential fatty acids, and fiber.

Daily servings of AIM BarleyLife® can make a lifelong difference for dad. This concentrated powder form of greens provides absorbable, natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and chlorophyll—like a salad in a glass!

A daily intake of omega-3 and -6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) is a necessity since these indispensible nutrients cannot be produced by the body. EFAs are vital for the health of every cell in dad’s body and provide a long list of health benefits, such as aiding digestion, burning fat, and lowering triglyceride and blood pressure levels. AIMega®’s EFA blend of organic seed oils provides dad with 1,140 mg of omega-3 fatty acids per capsule.

Fiber every day is the third essential way to prevention. A high-fiber intake plays a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases. Making certain that dad gets enough fiber in his diet by supplementing with AIM Herbal Fiberblend®, AIM FibreBalance®, or AIM fit ‘n fiber® will help to keep his digestive system working optimally and contribute to healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.

When Dad Needs a Little More

You have dad on the preventative path with the Daily Essentials, but he may require something more. If dad wants additional support for his heart, add AIM CellSparc 360®. The coenzyme Q10 in CellSparc 360 provides energy for the heart and body and assists the heart with cardiac output, exercise tolerance, and more.

If dad is struggling with an enlarged prostate that is causing him urinary difficulties, AIM ReAssure SP® can be added. To help reduce dad’s stress levels, AIM Composure® provides an herbal remedy for relaxing and helping him to sleep better at night, which is also an essential element of good health.

Being aware of possible health risks and the support that is available from all-natural AIM products, dear old dad can be in great shape this Father’s Day. Make men’s health a priority this month and beyond.

“As a result of taking BarleyLife, Herbal Fiberblend, and AIMega, I have noticed an increase in my

energy level and a decrease in the frequency and duration of colds. Also as a byproduct, I was able to stop taking acid reflux medication and have eliminated it with the use of Herbal Fiberblend. With all of the cancer out
there, it’s nice to know I have not only good stuff going into my body but bad stuff coming out! “

Greens and their Role in Cancer Prevention

By Lezaan Vermeulen – AIM Nutritionist

Cancer, the malignant growth or tumour that results from uncontrolled and abnormal cell division, ranks just below cardiovascular disease in the United States as a leading cause of death. Today cancers prognosis is far brighter than it has been in the past and the identification of the risk factors, innovative therapies and new detection techniques offer people encouragement and hope.

According to the American Dietetic Association, a review published Journal refers to the types of fruit or vegetables that largely often appear to be protective against cancer are raw vegetables, followed by green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, allium vegetables, carrots, and tomatoes.

How leafy green vegetables might prevent cancer

One reason why the debate among scientists about vegetables and cancer risk continues: no means of explaining possible cancer prevention has yet been found.  One study showed that people who added more leafy green vegetables to their diet have a lesser amount of risky DNA and when DNA is less risky it has less methylation in certain genes. The proposed model works in the following way:

·        More vegetables → Less DNA Methylation → Lower Risk of Lung Cancer

According to studies an opposite model can also be expressed

  • Less Vegetables → More DNA Methylation → Higher Risk of Lung Cancer

The significance of methylation

The addition of a simple four atom molecule to a substance is known to be methylation, and in this case it would be a gene in a person’s DNA.  Thus a gene changes how it works when it is methylated; therefore an association occurs between “higher” methylation and an increased risk of cancer.  It appears that the methylation interferes with the control of normal cell division, hence allowing some cells to grow wildly and the result is cancer.

Potentially reduced lung cancer risk

In a study which used over 1,000 subjects and sputum was coughed up from deep inside their lungs, these samples contained a number of lung tissue cells.  In eight key genes the lung cells were analyzed for methylation, specific genes were selected since they were known to have been associated with the risk of cancer. Smokers and ex-smokers were chosen as subjects because they are of higher risk of lung cancer.  Researchers specifically looked at the subjects’ diets; they found that those who ate more leafy green vegetables were at a lower risk of developing cancer.  It also showed that the risk decrease in subjects who took multivitamins.

Vegetables may be epigenetic

According to experts they believe there are two major causes of cancer.  Firstly genetic, which is a change in one or more genes in the DNA; this usually occurs through damage or mutation.  Secondly epigenetic, this refers to a factor outside the genes that changes the normal control of a gene or genes, therefore making them function differently.

A well known substance in vegetables, a photochemical, might be epigenetic.  Epigenetic changes are gradual, accumulation may occur until there are sufficient changes to overcome the normal control mechanisms of the cells.  It might be possible to stop these changes before it reaches the dangerous stage, when caught in time.

The vegetable – cancer controversy

While studies have shown that an association exists between vegetable consumption and less cancer risk, others have not.  The famous ATBC study, showed an elevation in lung cancer risk in smokers who consumed supplementation of beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A).

More than 29,000 male smokers participated in this clinical trial; they were randomly assigned to take supplementation of beta carotene, vitamin E, both or the placebo.  ATBC researchers reported that after the average follow-up period of six years, the

participants who took the supplements had a 16 percent higher incidence of lung cancer than among those who took a placebo.  The death rate from all the causes was 8 percent higher in those participants who received beta-carotene supplementation.

Phytochemicals do prevent against cancer (in this case in non-smokers), but like the ATBC study it clearly shows that individuals who smokes does not really make a big difference in prevention but definitely in progression.

Phytochemicals and cancer prevention

What are phytochemicals (also known as phytonutrients)?

Phytochemicals are found in plants and acts as a chemical defense, protecting plants against bacteria, fungi and viruses.  The consumption of large amounts of brightly colour fruits and vegetables (blue, green, orange, purple, red, yellow and white), beans, and whole grains/cereals, containing phytochemicals could reduce the developing of diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and hypertension.  The function of phytochemicals varies by the type and colour of the fruit and vegetables, while they also function as nutrient protectors or antioxidants, preventing the formation of carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

  • A phytochemical – indoles-, are found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens, etc. (also known as cruciferous vegetables).  They contain active agents and sulphur that destroys cancer-causing chemicals.  Indoles could stimulate enzymes in women that produce estrogen not that effective and detoxify toxins in food, therefore protecting against the development of breast cancer.

  • Lignans are found in fatty fish, flaxseed, walnuts and whole grain products. It is suggested that they also block hormones that can cause the spreading of cancer, such as prostaglandins and estrogen.  Parsley contains polyacetylene which destroys a powerful cancer-causer benzopyrene.  Rosemary, a well known herb, is graced with quinines, a biological antioxidant that is non-enzymatic and is reported to obstruct carcinogens and co-carcinogens.  Sterols are found in the skin of a cucumber and is said to lower cholesterol and in licorice, triterpenoids slows the growth of fast growing cells, such as cancer cells.

  • Lutein is found in leafy green vegetables.  Cataracts and macular degeneration might be prevented by lutein, as well as breast cancer and reducing the risk of heart disease.  Research showed that lutein also helps in the prevention of colon and skin cancer.

A number of 83,234 healthy women participated in a long-term study and evaluated the association between carotenoid intake and breast cancer.  The intake of food and supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin might reduce the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women, according to researchers.  A strong association occurred among women with a higher risk of breast cancer, as established by a family history of the disease, as well as through vegetable consumption (drinking at least one alcoholic beverage per day).  Another study of 540 women indicated that an increased risk of breast cancer was found in women with very low intakes of lutein, due to the lack of supplementation or a poor diet.

The most dangerous type of skin cancer is known as malignant melanoma, and there is a rapid increase in its prevalence.  Sun exposure and having a fair complexion that burns easily is a crucial risk factor.  According to one of the largest case-controlled studies, an association was reported between diet and melanoma and found that a high intake of fruit and vegetables (containing lutein), reduces the risk of melanoma drastically.  There is also believed that xanthopyll carotenoid protects the skin against sun damage through the prevention of melanoma.  Xanthophylls provides protection on tissue level, rather than plasma level, hence eating lutein-containing foods wont necessarily be protective on the day of sun exposure, but daily consumption of lutein rich foods will be beneficial.

  • In artichokes and green tea polyphenob are found, this phytochemical may also offer some protection from cancer.  Data from Case Western Reserve University suggests that green tea contains an important chemopreventive effect against all of the stages of carcinogenesis; and it also may be helpful against inflammatory reactions that are associated with exposure to solar radiation and chemical tumour-promoters.

Dark green leafy vegetables are listed under the “Foods that fight cancer” in accordance with The American Institute for cancer research:

Chicory, collard greens, mustard greens, kale, leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, spinach and Swiss chard are great sources of folate, fibre and carotenoids such as flavonoids and saponins, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin.

According to AICR’s second expert report Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: carotenoids found in food possibly protects against the risk of cancer of the mouth, larynx and pharynx.

Researchers found that carotenoids found in food seem to prevent cancer by functioning as antioxidants, basically scouring possibly dangerous free radicals from the body before they cause any harmful effects.  Laboratory research discovered that carotenoids in dark leafy green vegetables can decrease the growth of certain types of cancer cells, including those in the breast, lung, skin and stomach.

Foods containing folate, according to The Second Expert Report, noted that it lowers the risk of pancreatic cancer and foods rich in dietary fibre most likely decreases the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Much research has been done on fruits and vegetables (especially leafy green vegetables) containing vitamins, provitamins, dietary minerals, fibre and a variety of phytochemicals, which have been claimed to have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties etc.  Research has shown that all of these significant factors play an important role in cancer prevention, decreasing the risk in developing cancer.

By eating many fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes and also reducing the intake of saturated and trans fats, people obtain the best possible nutrition at the smallest possible risk.  Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity and a healthy diet is also beneficial.
