Speedskater Liz Looby boosts her recovery with nutrition

AIM nutrition powered short track speedskater J.R. Celski to win a pair of bronze medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics and helped him recover ahead of schedule after a potentially life-threatening skating injury. Turns out, J.R. isn’t the only skater who has used AIM to return fast and strong from an injury.

Liz Looby from Rochester, New York, sustained a serious injury during a speedskating competition, leaving both her career and mobility in jeopardy. Fortunately, the Loobys connected with J.R. and his dad, AIM Director Bob Celski. A few days after the skating accident, Bob gave Liz a blueprint for a full recovery using AIM nutritional supplements.

“J.R. Celski came back with AIM nutrition to medal at the Olympics,” Liz’s father Michael said. “Liz is doing her best to set an example of her own.”

Liz’s skating career began following the 2006 Winter Olympics after she saw the U.S. speedskating team compete. Her prior sports history had included track, cross country, and skiing in high school. In Rochester, New York, she found a speed skating team that offered a learn-to-skate program. Immediately, she showed promise and competed in eight competitions in her first full season. Liz trained primarily as a short track speedskater.

After high school, Liz chose to attend the University of Utah so that she could be near the U.S. Speedskating team’s facilities in Salt Lake. Her speedskating career took off from there. By August 2009, she had qualified for the short track Olympic time trials. A month later, Liz competed in Marquette, Michigan at the same trials when J.R. was seriously injured.

During a 1,000-meter race in Milwaukee on October 3, 2010, Liz also hit a career crossroads after sustaining a devastating injury that caused extensive damage to the back of her right knee.

“According to the orthopedic and plastic surgeons in Milwaukee,” Michael Looby said, “her injuries included significant lacerations to her hamstring and several tendons and 95 percent severance of the tibial nerve, which is critical to the functioning of the lower leg and to movement and sensation of the foot.”

Orthopedic surgeons repaired several tendons, while a plastic surgeon using microsurgery repaired the gastrocnemius muscle and attempted to realign and suture the tibial nerve. In Milwaukee, doctors told her that it could take two years to know whether or not nerve regeneration would occur.

Liz responded to the injury much the same way J.R. did: with determination, focus, and hard work, and AIM products. Instead of coming home to New York following her care in Milwaukee, she insisted on returning to Salt Lake City to be around her friends and fellow skaters for emotional support as well as to be near the Utah training facility to begin recovery and training. Her enthusiasm to return to the ice was inspiring.

“Even while still in a full leg brace, Liz was back at the (skating) oval, peddling an exercise bike with her good leg and engaging in what she called ‘agility crutching’—attempting to navigate cones on the running track on crutches! “

Liz kept in good spirits, too. She attended her team’s Halloween party—leg brace and all—and went skydiving on her 21st birthday with friends.

At this point in her recovery, Liz and her father found out about the AIM products after meeting Bob Celski in October 2011 through their connections with the U.S. speedskating team.

Liz’s father believes that the key was getting on the AIM product so quickly after her injury.

“Bob called me with both empathy and terrific information about how J.R. and his family had put together a recovery program which relied in great part upon use of several of the AIM products,” Michael said. “We knew from J.R.’s experience that the therapeutic use of several AIM products in combination, proved extremely effective in the recovery of injured muscles and tendons, and we made full use of those as a central part of Liz’s recovery program.”

Even beyond recovery, the Loobys found that AIM products would prove beneficial for long-term use and the continuing regeneration of nerves, which was a problematic area of Liz’s recovery. Liz continues training to get a qualifying time for her return to competition before the end of the season (early March 2012).

Jim Horton at the top of his game

AIM Member Jim Horton from Guttenberg, New Jersey, trust the AIM products to keep himat the top of his game. His game just happens to be the National Senior Games where Jim is a multiple gold-medal winner. Here he explains his latest exploits at the Texas Senior Games and Houston’s National Senior Games.

“I just returned home from Texas where I competed in the Texas Senior Games at Bryan/ College Station. I raced in the 1,500-meter and 5-kilometer race-walks and the 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs in the 70-to-75 age group. I won them all.

 “I came in first overall among all age groups in three of the four races, and I brought home four gold medals from the Texas meet. I then went to Comstock, Texas—with twenty-five-to thirty mile per hour winds and temperatures over 100 degrees—to train for the National Senior Games which took place the following month in Houston.

 “At the nationals, I won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter race-walk, beating my own best time by over fifty seconds. The following morning, I ran a 5-kilometer race at 7:00 a.m., coming in third. Two hours later, at 9:00 a.m., I walked a 5-kilometer race-walk, winning the gold in my age group and coming in sixth overall out of a group of people from age fifty to 100.

 “It is a great blessing to have won the 2011 National Senior Championship in race-walk and third in the nation in the 5-kilometer run. I worked hard training, prayed Isaiah 40:31 as I trained, and took AIM BarleyLife®and AIM Peak Endurance® to maximize my  recovery.

“And I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Someone said after the recent races that I could sit back and relax. No, I have many races to compete in and am registering for the New Jersey Senior Games, which come up this fall.

Zoë Soul loves Nutrition that works!

Acting, dancing, modeling, and more—AIM-sponsored celebrity Zoë Soul has little down time in her busy schedule. Still, she always makes time for one thing: AIM products.

Detox Your Mood:Feeling better in the New Year

The festive season is a time of joy and merriment; it’s a time to put aside your daily routines and to celebrate with your loved ones. More often than not, rich food and alcohol form part of this celebration, and overindulgence during the holiday season is the norm. While a day or two of indiscretion may be OK, a few weeks worth of unhealthy foods, parties, wining and dining can leave you feeling low and sluggish. Get healthy and happy again by exercising, eating right and supplementing well to begin the New Year on a high note.

 

According to the Mayo Clinic, some preliminary research suggests that having a poor diet can make you more vulnerable to depression. Researchers in Britain looked at depression and diet in over 3000 middle-aged office workers over the course of five years. They found that people who ate a junk food diet — one that was high in processed meat, chocolates, sweet desserts, fried food, refined cereals and high-fat dairy products — were more likely to report symptoms of depression.

A study by BBC health investigated the impact of diet on the mental health of 200 people in Britain. Researchers reported that changing the diet improved mental health significantly. 26% said they had seen large improvements in mood swings, 26% noticed improvement in panic attacks and anxiety, and 24% noted an improvement in depression. The participants said that cutting down on food ‘stressors’ and increasing the amount of ‘supporters’ that they ate helped to improve their mood. ‘Stressors’ were foods such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol and chocolate (all festive favourites!) ‘Supporters’ included water, vegetables, fruit, oil-rich fish, nuts, beans, non-fat dairy products, egg whites and whole grains.

 

Along with wreaking havoc on your blood glucose levels, the refined sugar found in chocolates, sweets and other treats has been implicated in aggressive behaviour, depression, fatigue, anxiety and many other conditions. Excessive consumption of refined sugar is also undesirable because sugar uses B-vitamins for its breakdown, and the B vitamins are very extremely important in regulating the mood.  

What to eat

 

There are certain things that you can eat that can actually help to boost your mood. The B-vitamins, for example, are important in this case, as a B-vitamin deficiency can lead to exhaustion, irritability and depression, amongst other things. Over the past several years, evidence has mounted that B-vitamins—B12 and folate in particular—may ward off depression and other mental problems. Sources of folate include asparagus, spinach, beef liver and lentils, while foods of an animal origin (i.e. meat and dairy) are sources of vitamin B12.

It is widely believed that a deficiency in the neurotransmitter serotonin plays a role in depression. Tryptophan is an amino acid precursor to serotonin, and is especially rich in foods such as fish, turkey, chicken, cheese, tofu, oats and eggs. However, eating a meal that is high in tryptophan won’t raise your serotonin levels unless you eat a meal that is relatively high in carbohydrates too, especially unrefined carbohydrates.

The role of carbohydrates in uplifting the mood must also be emphasized. Glucose (from carbohydrates) is the brain’s primary source of fuel; so a reduced carbohydrate intake will reduce the brain’s source of energy. Carbohydrate-containing foods like breads, cereals and pasta can produce a temporary increase in brain serotonin, and a subsequent calming or anxiety-reducing effect.

 

However, it’s not just what you eat but also how you eat that will affect your mood. Eating small, regular meals will help to balance your blood sugar levels, and there is no question that individuals who battle to keep their blood sugar levels stable also experience fluctuations in mood.

 

Get moving

 

If you ask someone why they exercise, they will often tell you “Because it makes me feel good.” As it turns out, it actually does! Exercise is slowly being linked through research with improved psychological functioning. Exercise actually seems to help people cope with the negative effects of stress. Some psychologists actually recommend exercise as therapy for their patients who are having mental or emotional difficulties. The exact cause of exercise’s influence on an improved mental outlook is not completely understood. It may be as simple as a feeling of satisfaction and self-worth that is created by getting and staying in shape.

Guidelines for physical activity from the American College of Sports Medicine include doing moderately intense cardio for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week OR doing vigorously intense cardio for 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week AND doing 8 to 10 strength-training exercises, with 8 to 12 repetitions of each exercise twice a week.
